GUM004 - "The Wizard" by John Beabout
"Every time I talk to John I learn something new. He's a creative powerhouse, musical innovator, sonic appreciator, and avid spell-caster with the ability to destroy your heart and reconstruct it in the span of a one minute song. His subject matter presents itself as mundane, with topics that speak of a sort of secluded utopia; John's voice and intention pushes these themes into the immensity of the world and touches every soul he connects with. At first sight his music appears simple and contrived, like a whisper from the well. However, appreciating his crackly voice and trusty keyboard in the grand scheme of things reveals new scenery– unattainable but eerily palpable.
"The Wizard" is bare bones, intimate and sincere. It works as a snapshot of Beabout's psyche and expresses every detail atop the structure of what he calls "The Golden Formula". This spell of wizardry results in songs that feel familiar but evidence themselves as completely alien when dissected. Everything, from rhythm to melody to textural displacement is ruled by the boundaries of the formula (with the exception of two tracks), condensing the mind of a genius into a release for the ages. This makes the record bounce in familiarity, hypnotise with apparent repetition, showcase true and intimate emotion right in the spotlight. The constant djembe patterns help the music trot forward in an erratic but comfortable fashion. John's three tone melodies entrance like folk songs from a different world, an empty world made by, for and with John. His music is unlike any other, and it's up to you to decide if you'd like to enter".
